— Ace Maybe this isn't fair, but when I hear people (including in Big Media) call Obama "professorial," I can't help but hear them say he's "professorial, boy."
It is now officially racist to say anything critical about Obama at all.
Ogletree, founding and executive director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, says he sees the “professor” label as a thinly veiled attack on Obama’s race. Calling Obama “the professor” walks dangerously close to labeling him “uppity,” a term with racial overtones that has surfaced in the political arena before, Ogletree said. Describing his divisive confirmation hearings as a “circus,” Justice Clarence Thomas called the proceedings “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas.…” It is perhaps ironic, then, that Ogletree, who represented Anita Hill when she made harassment allegations against Thomas in 1991, now sees a bit of the “uppity” label being placed on Obama.“The idea is that he’s not one of us,” Ogletree says of the professor label. “He has these ideas that are left wing, that are socialist, that he’s palling around with terrorists -- those were buzzwords, but the reality was they were looking at this president as an African American who was out of place.”
Thomas L. Haskell, a professor emeritus of history at Rice University, agrees that racial bias may be implicit in the attack on ObamaÂ’s professorial past.
“For me and a lot of other academic types, we identify with Obama precisely because he is an intellectual,” Haskell says. “But what does that mean to John Q. Public? I don’t know. John Q. Public may be frightened of these people, especially because this particular intellectual is a black.”
For guys so concerned with racism, they sure don't seem to have much of a problem stereotyping, generalizing about, and making very uninformed pronouncements about the evil lurking in the hearts of millions of people.
It should be noted that for eight years, Bush was attacked as an "uneducated chimp." No racist attack there, because that wasn't ever a stereotype or putdown applied to whites.
Well, not to be a dick about this or anything, but "overeducated and effete" is not really a stereotype routinely applied to blacks. Jews might complain on this score a bit, but a black guy? You can't cry racist stereotype about a stereotype that doesn't exist. (And, in fact, it's sort of a good stereotype, you know?)
They evade this problem by postulating that racism is now only the act of deeming someone "The Other."
But, see, in politics, everyone who disagrees with you is pretty much "The Other." It's standard politics to try to convince independents and swing voters that your political opponent doesn't "share their values" and isn't "just like them."
But we're not allowed to do that anymore, I guess.
One thing we and the race-baiters are alway going to disagree on is "Special Rules for Special People." We say: No special rules; that's how we demonstrate the lack of bias or prejudice. And, in fact, "special rules" only demonstrate that someone is "special," which is another word for... different, also known as "The Other."
But they want it both ways. Or really they want it six different ways 'till Sunday. They keep arguing for special rules, thus reinforcing the idea they're supposedly trying to combat (that Obama is "special") and, having fought mightily for special rules for this apparently exotic, alien creature, then wish us to forget everything they just said and accept him as not special or different at all.
Obama definitely is special and different in one aspect: He's President of the United States of America.
Apparently, though, dissent is now no longer not the highest form of patriotism, but is actually racist. And will remain so until around noonish on January 20, 2013.
Thanks to Slublog.

— Ace They can't understand why anyone would reject "science" such as this.
ENSLER: Well, I just think the idea that she doesn't believe in global warming is bizarre.BEHAR: Every scientist at every note believes in it but Sarah Palin doesn't believe in it.
ENSLER: And I think we just kind of have to walk around the world at this point and look at what is happening to nature and earthquakes and tsunamis.
BEHAR: Right.
ENSLER: And weather changes to just feel it. But I think that idea that she doesn't believe in global warming and she could actually run for vice president, and we have a country where that is possible, it seems insane.
BEHAR: It's unbelievable. It does seem insane and the fact that she has not negated the possibility of running in 2012.
ENSLER: But we have. We have negated the possibility of her winning.
A point I've made to death is that part of the appeal of liberalism for the intellectually insecure is the belief that simply buying into liberalism makes one smarter. Here, we have a couple of yentas who are scientifically illiterate talking about how scientific they are.
(In case you'd forgotten, tsunamis are not a weather-related phenomenon, but are tidal waves caused by underwater earthquakes and such.)
But they're just getting started. The self-congratulatory Orgy of Stupid continues:
ENSLER: But I think part of it is like why are we giving [Sarah Palin] so much attention. You know I was looking at that Tea Party thing last night. How many people were there? 600? Why is the entire media covering an event with 600 people.BEHAR: I don't know.
ENSLER: V-day has 5,000 events this year. At one event there's 600 people, why are they covering that? What do we choose to cover in the media? Why is anyone giving attention to people who have really have a level of intelligence that hasn't really evolved yet?
BEHAR: I agree with you.
ENSLER: You know, you know, it's problematic. It's problematic.
Sarah Palin's intelligence hasn't "evolved" yet to the point where she comprehends that earthquakes and tsunamis are caused by global warming.
And Behar and Ensler mock her for that. The marriage of perfect ignorance and and arrogance is impressive.
And they're still not done yet:
ENSLER: Well I'm not talk you can about the people who necessarily are following Sarah Palin. Because I think people have the right to be afraid right now. I identify with working people. I feel for people are out of jobs and they don't have money. What` I'm talking about is people who are creating Sarah Palin and Sarah Palin herself putting out information that is manipulated, that's distorted, and illusory. That's the people I have problems with.BEHAR: Well she plays fast and loose with facts.
ENSLER: Oh, does she ever.
Palin plays "fast and loose with the facts," unlike Ensler and Behar, who are quite certain that rising temperatures may cause tectonic plates to "sweat," and thereby become more "lubricated," and thereby slip past each other and cause earthquakes and tsunamis.
This is not science; this is magic, and a particularly primitive and dunderheaded system of magic at that.
But oh how they congratulate themselves on being up with he "facts" about the New Alchemy.

— Open Blogger (A series of daily-ish roundups of the day's Climate news and commentary.)
This is by no means a comprehensive recap. The stories come from a variety of sources, and I highly recommend exploring the linked sites for more breaking news.
It's been a long time since I posted anything -- work has been brutal this year, and frankly I got a bit burned out on posting just climate stuff. Let's face it: researching climate news cuts pretty deeply into my life's work of cataloging all the pr0n on the internet.
(after the break...)

— Maetenloch Good evening M&Ms.
MTV - The first 10 minutes
On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 am MTV: Music Television launched with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll". And despite just being available to a few thousand NJ cable subscribers history was made. Only a few years later a musician's MTV video could make or break their career. For a case in point see this video.
So for your enjoyment here are the first ten minutes of the MTV era.
And now almost 30 years later they've just dropped 'Music Television' from their logo reflecting the fact that over the last decade they've pretty much become a youth reality show network. more...

— Ace Heh. Pretty silly.
Correction: Yesterday I mentioned Paul Ryan's plan to save entitlements and put the country on a sound financial footing.
I incorrectly stated that the only fix to the entitlements he proposed (or which would be necessary) was a phased-in escalation of the age at which benefits are paid out, from age 65 to age 70.
In fact, his plan includes means-testing, plus vouchers to get people off government health care and into private plans.
Retracto the Correction Alpaca forced me to issue this correction by looking at me with them "crazy-eyes."

— Ace Palin Steele landed his/her dream job of writing for Captain America.
While investigating this subversive group, Captain America and his partner The Falcon — a black super hero — have decided to try and infiltrate the secretive organization.
In preparation for the infiltration, Marvel Comics depicts the two super heroes out of costume and observing from a rooftop a street filled with what can only be described as a Tea Party protest. The scene shows crowds of people in city streets carrying signs that say, “stop the socialists,” “tea bag libs before they tea bag you,” and “no to new taxes.” Naturally, the people in these crowds are depicted as being filled with nothing but white folks. The black character asks the out of costume Captain, “What the hell is this?” And follows that with, “looks like some kind of anti-tax protest.” The Falcon character then snidely tells his partner the Captain, “So I guess this whole ‘hate the government’ vibe around here isn’t limited to the Watchdogs.”
The two then discuss their plan to infiltrate the subversive group that Marvel comics seems to be linking to the Tea Party movement. This discussion culminates in The Falcon wondering how a black man would do such a thing. “I don’t exactly see a black man from Harlem fitting in with a bunch of angry white folks,” he tells the incognito Captain America.
The Captain tells him, “no it’s perfect… this all fits right into my plan.” After this we find that the Captain’s plan is to send the black man into a redneck bar to pretend to be a black man working for the IRS and to get everyone all mad… because… well, you know that every white person is a racist that hates black civil servants, right?
So, there you have it, America. Tea Party protesters just “hate the government,” they are racists, they are all white folks, they are angry, and they associate with secretive white supremacist groups that want to over throw the U.S. government.
It's worse than that. Under Bush, Captain America turned anti-government (and sorta anti-American too, if you ask me) and was much-concerned with thwarting evil-doers who... um, were like trying to kill terrorists and stuff.
But now, under Obama, it's safe to uncritically trust the government again, I guess.
