— Ace Sorry, just a palate cleanser from the Akin unpleasantness, thanks to @laurww. Yes, LauraW signed up for twitter, created a nonsensical typo name that looks like something Frankenstein says while nutting, and just decided to keep it that way. That's why she fits in so well around here. more...

— Ace I am being informed by two or three Mensa Chapter Presidents that I am causing the disastrous 20 point decline in Todd Akin's polling (from 10 points ahead to eleven points behind).
I previously caused a similar cratering of Republican support in the case of Christine O'Donnell. When she became the nominee, the Democrat went from ten points down to ten points ahead.
I don't know why I do these things. I see a parade of strong, articulate, attractive candidates, who are will almost inevitably win on their strong moral compasses, and then I tear them down via this blog.
In each case, I take someone who will almost certainly win, "if we all just have enough faith," and turn them into a loser.
What I really must apologize for, still further, is the fact that this blog has such a powerful sway on the body politic, and yet, rather than devoting this well-nigh preeminent level of political power to helping surefire winner candidates like Christine O'Donnell and Todd Akin, I instead warn other Republicans that they're going to lose, and this process of warning -- this process of prognostication -- thereby causes the actual loss.
And what doesn't cause the loss is, say, the actual failings and weaknesses of the candidates in question, about which I am warning.
That is to say, these losses are not caused by people behaving like teenagers who think that machismo and status ride on doing stupid, reckless things, but rather are due to the adults who say things like "You shouldn't dive from a pier without guaranteeing by close personal inspection that the water is deep enough to prevent a crippling injury."
While I dress such warnings up to sound "adult," in fact these are the womanly caterwaulings of a RINO and likely homosexual. It is, in fact, those with the juvenile sense of Let's Do Something Dumb who are the true adults in the room.
Although I have chastised myself repeatedly for this nasty habit of being right in my predictions (or, I should say, more properly: Of my predictions causing the very catastrophes I warn against), I find I am incapable of stopping myself, and yet cling to this faggy notion that diving from a pier is probably a bad idea.
I'm sorry. I serve the party and the cause so poorly, and not Manfully and With Great Principle like so many others.
In this failing I join noted RINOs and suspected homosexuals Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michelle Malkin, and Ann Coulter. I am ashamed to note I will be joining them later for a party with the themes of Cross Dressing, ABBA, and Amyl Nitrite.
I must continue to fail you,
Ace

— Ace Coming up in a few minutes, scheduled for 5:15 ET. I don't know if Fox is covering it, but I turned to MSNBC and they've got their cameras ready!
He's changed his FaceBook status to say he's "beaten the party bosses" or something, and advance word is that he'll play the sympathy card by noting the death threats he's received (and rape suggestions directed at his wife).
That's terrible stuff, of course. And it's also no reason to support someone for Senate.
I was just joking that when you have nothing to say you pop off with something counterintuitive and therefore "grabby," even if not true. Dick Morris is claiming the Akin story is a "big plus" for Romney, because the story is now that responsible leaders of the party are repudiating him.
I don't believe that
For example, Romney just fell behind Obama in Missouri, per Rasmussen.
Oh My Goodness: It was a 30 second press conference, in which Todd Akin shifted his campaign to talking about economics/regulation/big government.
So, it turns out he's not going to be the guy standing on principle making his case on No-Exceptions after all.
So, after all this talk of principle, he's now shifting gears to just try to win.
And we should stick with him, even though he's radioactive, because... he's going to be avoiding the topic that got him into trouble.
Which is what a "RINO" would do. But let's stick with him, even though he won't in fact be making the case America Needs to Hear, because... he's just so special or something.
Gutless.
Punk.
Standing on Principle
It's what we do until we slip < 40%.

— Ace John King said that Romney "stepped on" this good news with his Birth Certificate joke.
I wonder if Romney didn't do that on purpose. Since our unserious, unprofessional, unintelligent, partisan press is determined to talk about distractions (given that all substance favors Romney), why not give them a distraction of your own choosing?
If the choice is between Rape!!! and Birth Certificate, isn't it better to talk about Obama's Birth Certificate? Neither is what Romney wants to talk about, but the press is determined to only report on irrelevancies; so give them one that doesn't much hurt you.
Anyway, the poll. It's a deadlock, the 2% lead statistically meaningless. Romney leads independents 48-45 (which itself is statistically meaningless).
According to the poll, 50% of likely voters see Romney in a favorable way, with 46% saying they see him in an unfavorable light. Fifty-two percent say they have a favorable opinion of the president, with 47% saying the see him in an unfavorable way.
Remember when I said that as people were forced to make a decision, these secondary questions such as favorability and "shares my values" would all begin lining up with people's preferences on the Main Question, of which candidate interviewees support? There you go.
Bonus Damage: via @notlenc, Ryan edges Biden on favorability. Biden: 46%-47% (underwater, but statistical tie) Ryan 45%-39% (above water, not a tie).
Will the press finally stop talking about how personally popular Obama is? And what a big draw Biden is to blue-collar voters?
By the Way: I've heard the media is considering not covering Ann Romney's speech. Of course they'll cover Michelle Obama's.
Ann Romney scares them. She is a natural.

— Ace "The basest and the most despicable bigotry we might be able to imagine."
See, this is why I sort of think it's funny. It's a "secondary reaction" joke. The joke itself is lame. The humor comes from imagining the reaction of the thin-skinned Obama and his hyperprotective partisans in the press. Then, of course, seeing it.
I think this is a type of clapper humor we see a lot from liberals, especially Bill Maher. His "jokes" aren't funny; but people laugh because they are anticipating an angry, upset reaction from the right.
So, it's not a style of joke of high craftsmanship. But it is one that has long had a cherished place in the leftist toolbox.
So game on. more...

— Ace I know, I know. This comes as great a shock to me as it does to you.
Be strong. Life is about discovery, and sometimes even unwelcome discoveries.
Let me just suggest that there are some circumstances in which a smartly-executed "Now hold on there, Princess" is not only acceptable, but well-nigh mandatory.

— DrewM Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Romney/Ryan just wrapped up a big rally in suburban Detroit (Oakland County is a big GOP stronghold in that state). Either it's going to be in play or this is just their last chance to make Team Obama think they are going to play there. Either way, the GOP map is expanding and Obama's is shrinking.
One programming note: The American Legion's annual convention started yesterday and runs through next week. I'm actually going to be heading out there this week to do some blogging from the convention so look for some interview with political types and discussion of veterans issues throughout the week. At this point it looks like the big highlight will be on Wednesday as Romney is scheduled to address the convention in person. Maybe I'll get an interview, or you know, not.
