Oh, by the way, Los Angeles people, the San Fran crowd is WAY easier to get together. What's up with that?

Original Post:

Alright, I'm going to be in San Francisco on Monday evening and several people expressed an interest in getting something together.

I was thinking Jupiter or Beckett's in Berkeley. I realize it's a weeknight, so what I need from you if you're interested is an email saying:

(1) that you're interested, duhurr; and
(2) what time is best for you (from when until when).

My email address is gabriel dot malor at gmail.

After I hear from folks, I'll send an email with the time and how to find us. Email addys will be kept strictly confidential, at least until I sell them to David Axelrod.

Open Thread -- Global Warming Edition
— Purple Avenger

The PRC news agency Xinhua has a nice one-stop shopping list of global warming news links here.

With the ONT approach 1000 comments, and load times slowing accordingly, all things Dolph/Coakley/Brown/AGW and other random loose shit can be directed here now to improve response times.

BTW, the Xinhua roundup definitely rates better than a B+

Overnight Open Thread (Mætenloch)
— Open Blog

Hello, hello all M&Ms. Welcome to the weekend so pull up a stool and let's get started. I'll be traveling all this week so expect the ONTs to be 21% suckier.

The Awesomeness of Dolph Lungren
Okay okay he's a dirty Swedish scandi but apart from that he's actually a pretty awesome guy. Here's a couple of Dolph facts you probably didn't know: By training he's a chemical engineer and he has a masters degree in ChemEng from the University of Sydney. The only reason he came to the US is because he won a Fulbright scholarship to study at MIT.

However shortly thereafter he met and started dating Grace Jones who convinced him to take up acting instead. So that was then end of his academic career. Since then he's played countless bad guys, a few good ones and even made a cheesy workout video. Oh and he also won the European full-contact karate championships in 1980 and 1981.

Nowadays he's chosen to live in the US along with his wife and kids and does directing along with the occasional appearance on Red Eye. So all in all I'm willing to overlook his scandi past.

brown intrade chart
The price seems a little rich at this point. If I had some of that action at 10, I'd probably be selling at this point just to protect profits. Fraud could still be a big factor.

Oh my...the dem Praetorian Guard is in revolt. Some SEIU members are demonstrating FOR Brown. Ballsy move.

Because all the "official" bloggers are getting soused...

Rogers-Cromartie's injury may mean Arizona is toast. But then again, they weren't actually planning on playing defense, were they?

Pro-Kidnapping? Pro-Coakley!
— Jack M.

The Best. Candidate. Evah keeps getting bettah and bettah.

See? I spelled "better" as "bettah" because that's how they say it in Massachusett[e]s. As Harry Reid might say, there is a distinct New England dialect in play, and I'm trying to capture it to make my writing more vivid and lifelike. I want my writing to pop like Curt Schilling's fastball did back when he, Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin were the three legs of the Bronx Zoo stool.

But I digress. My real point is this: I can only name one "news personality" that isn't on Fox News. That personality? Nancy Grace.

And what does Nancy Grace broadcast around the clock? Stories about missing kids and parental kidnappings.

Now I don't watch her show, but I do occasionally date women who do. As a result, I get the feeling that Grace's broadcast appeals to a certain demographic group that is clamoring for a nighttime show like "Oprah After Dark". Based on my limited demograhic research, I'm pretty sure that most of the women who watch these shows aren't real fond of kidnappers.

But you know who appears to be? Attorney General Martha Coakley!

Back in 1999, Coakley was district attorney for Middlesex County near Boston. She approved a plea deal that allowed Palm Beach socialite Stephen Fagan to avoid prison after kidnapping his daughters in a 1979 custody fight and hiding them from their mother until 1998.

Fagan, who reinvented himself in Palm Beach as Dr. William Martin, said he took the girls from Massachusetts to Florida to protect them from an alcoholic mother who was endangering their lives — a claim the mother disputed. The girls were raised believing their mother had been killed in a car crash.

Fagan pleaded guilty in a Massachusetts court in 1999 and paid a $100,000 fine, served five years probation and performed 2,000 hours community service at the VA Medical Center in Riviera Beach.

What, oh what, would Nancy Grace say about this? I bet it wouldn't be very nice. She seems like a kinda tough lady. I bet she wouldn't have let some guy off the hook for kidnapping just because he was a well-connected "socialite", would she?

'Cause like I say, I don't watch Grace's show, so I don't know what she would do. I do know that Martha Coakley would though.

And that's as obvious as red blood on a white sock.

Saturday Haiku Thingy
— LauraW

Well.
It's been quite a week, hasn't it?

I'm sitting here on the back steps of the AOSHQ with the laptop, smoking a ciggy and watching Ace and Slublog clean their hobo gaffs and chat (they went on a joint expedition last night).

It's a little chilly, but a beautiful mild Winter morning in New England. My coffee is making little curls of steam, just like the still-warm entrails that Slublog is shoveling into the storm drain right now.

Good day for some not-very literary goofiness. Haiku in 5-7-5 format or Loose Shit, your choice.

Overnight Open Thread - TGIF Edition (Mætenloch)
— Open Blog

Friday, Friday, Friday and welcome all morons. And in keeping with our new all-Coakley-Brown-all-the-time blog format...

Bill Clinton, UN Special Envoy to Haiti, helping by ... campaigning for Coakley in MA
Back in May of last year Bill Clinton was appointed to be the UN special envoy to Haiti and and gushed: "I've been following this country for more than three decades, I fell in love with it 35 years ago when Hillary and I came here."

But now that Haiti's been hit with a 7.0 earthquake that may have killed up to 5% of the population, Clinton is busy off stumping for Coakley in Massachusetts, trying to rescue her from defeat. And in no mood for any criticism. Granted he's only being paid $1 year as envoy, but you'd think he could at least go visit Florida and pretend to earn it. I wonder if Haiti now feels 'disposable, used and insignificant' just like Monica.

Brown internal polling: up by 11 (!?!)
— Open Blog

Ace is busy doing blow off a dead hobo's belly so he asked me to post this for him.

According to Geraghty, Scott Brown's internal polls now have him up by 11, which is closer to last night's Pajamas poll than any official media number has been.

Listen, I don't think the election is in the bag, because there are lots and lots of forces trying to pull it one way or the other. But I certainly don't think it's unwinnable for Brown, and even a victory uncontestably outside the margin of fraud is certainly a possibility.

If you're far from MA, keep calm and keep sending money if you can. If you're in or near MA, keep calm and sign up for Brown GOTV if you haven't already. (That means doors this weekend, people.) Whatever happens, if you do what you can there'll be nothing to regret.
