— DrewM Oh wait, it's left wing hack Ed Shultz at down the middle of the road, real news organization MSNBC who is being wooed by North Dakota Democrats to run for the Senate.
State House Minority Leader Merle Boucher told POLITICO he made an official overture to Schultz late Tuesday night about launching a campaign and said he believes the TV commentator is "intrigued by the idea.""We have to find someone that has a high profile and a national fundraising base, and I can't think of anyone better than Ed Schultz in that regard," said Boucher. "He certainly didn't say no to me by any means," he added.
Dorgan's retirement announcement took state Democrats by surprise and immediately sent party leaders scrambling for a viable opponent to take on likely Republican candidate Gov. John Hoeven. Hoeven, who led Dorgan by double digits in public polls this fall, is expected to announce his candidacy within weeks.
You see according to the mental giants, Dorgan retired not because North Dakotans were sick of supporting liberal, big government programs but because they wanted someone even more liberal and supportive of big government programs. Yeah, that's the ticket guys...run really, really liberal guys in red states. Please.
Obviously the reality is they know this a lost seat so why not go for stunt casting. Still, I think this is a fantastic idea. Why wouldn't the Dems want to run a genius who thinks Great Britain has been America's "best ally since the country started". Apparently they don't teach anything about the American Revolution wherever good old Ed went to school. You can see more of Ed's special kind of smarts here.
In fact I think this is such a great idea Democrats should try it elsewhere.
NY Democrats are so sick of Kirsten Gillibrand they are considering running Tennessee transplant Harold Ford Jr. against her, I say we form a committee to draft a real, lifelong NY'er to run against her...Keith Olbermann.
What's the worst that could happen? He'd win? He won't be any different in terms of voting than your average NY Democrat who would win the seat. We'd also see less of him (if that's possible given how piss poor his ratings are compared to Fox) and the entertainment value would be huge!
He's going to need a campaign slogan. Any thoughts?

— Purple Avenger Of course, of course. That's the ticket - I.N.T.E.G.R.I.T.Y.
..Somewhat ironically, in stepping down Dodd is actually exhibiting a ton of integrity—doing the right thing for his country, his party, and the progressive political movement...Similar "integrity" was displayed by the Japanese when they surrendered on the deck of the Missouri, and when Doenitz was handed the mantle of the 1,000 year Reich and gave it all up to go fishing or something.
History is replete with such displays of "integrity". Nixon resigning. LBJ not running again. The King agreeing to the Magna Carta. BetaMax accepting gracious defeat at the hands of VHS. Philby coming out of the closet and going with his "true feelings".
Apparently wretched gut wrenching soul devouring defeat always has the silver lining of integrity associated with it. If you want to keep your integrity and reputation intact - FAIL.

— DrewM Noted Jew* and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor has released a memo outlining why Republicans think there are 37 House Democrats who voted for the original House bill who may be in play as possible No votes the second time around.
Cantor outlines 3 groups to target, those opposed to public funding of abortions, those whose states will be hit hardest by the elimination of Medicare Advantage and those who states are cutting education funding while being forced by this bill to pony up for more Medicaid spending (pdf).
Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid can no longer promise to address a wavering MemberÂ’s concerns later in the process. They can no longer make contradictory promises to different Members. And because of the work of the American people, they have hardly any margin for error in keeping 218 House votes and 60 Senate votes in lock-step.Although the Senate and House bills deal with the new government run plan differently, the key results of the provisions of both bills are the same: patients will not be able to keep the health plan that they like nor will small businesses in this struggling economy face relief, just more mandates.
It will be difficult for any House Democrat who originally opposed the House-passed bill to support anything that resembles the recently passed Senate bill. With a finite target list of House Democrats who can make the difference and help us defeat this bill, now is the time to redouble our efforts.
IÂ’m going to say that 37 is a bit optimistic but considering the bill only passed the House the first time by 2 votes, we donÂ’t need that many to kill this. Yeah, Pelosi probably had a few in her pocket that she let vote no who would be there if she insisted (much like the one Republican is thought to have voted yes only after passage was assured) but that was in November. Are those reserve Democrats there 2 months and a whole lot of dropping poll numbers later?
Reid and Pelosi may not be able to address everyone’s concerns in this bill but they will sell it as an opening step. The question is will members look at the landscape and think Reid and/or Pelosi won’t have a majority after this year to deliver on those promised ‘fixes’.
Leadership will also promise anything else (bridges, post offices, research money) for the districts of wavering members. The vote buying will be enough to make old school Chicago politicians blush.
I still think the odds are decidedly in favor of passage but itÂ’s not a done deal. Be sure to watch CSPAN as President Wonderful promised so you can see how the process works. Oh wait.
*For new comers to the HQ, this is an old joke.

SNIPER Steve Lewis is the dead-shot of the British Army - killing SEVEN Taliban fighters in one day.And the 29-year-old ex-binman who blew away 13 of the enemy in his first tour of duty pulls no punches about his job. Steve, of the 16 Air Assault Brigade, says: "We're glad when we get a kill - it's what we do".
Where'd he learn to shoot? Well, early on, maybe -- America.
Frank - who holds a British passport but grew up in America's Mid-West - adds: "Even so, if you talked about it much people would want to avoid you. They'd think you were weird."
In Barcelona (rent it, now, if you haven't), some Spanish lefties are knocking the American heroes about their homeland.
"America is so violent!" the lefty chicks squeal.
"It's not that violent," they protest.
"But the murder rate is so high!"
"Oh, well, that doesn't mean we're more violent," one American says. "That just means we're better shots."
Content Warning: Compilation of Canadian Snipers Killing Taliban. Strong violence content warning on this one. Old video, which you've probably seen, but worth a look.
Actually, I've never been sure this is video of Taliban being killed, or, like, some kind of mountain critter. Whichever -- it does show the devastating accuracy and power of a well-trained sniper.
Thanks to beedubya.

President Obama: On Second Thought, American Idol is Starting Again, and I Don't Want to Bother You
— Ace Change.
He made this specific pledge eight damn-bastard times, as this Naked Emperor News compilation demonstrates.
He also says -- this is kind of funny -- he wants to do this in order to invite the American public in the debate.
Don't you feel invited?

— Ace Some headline, huh?
Some commenters asked who she was. Well, she's either a talented or semi-talented (I go back and forth on that) pop tart. The weird thing is that she emulates not just Madonna but Alice Cooper.
Here's a vid that made me say, "Whoa." Stick to it until the end. There's shock moments here, but they're not, at long last, about sex.

Embattled Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd (D) has scheduled a press conference at his home in Connecticut Wednesday at which he is expected to announce he will not seek re-election, according to sources familiar with his plans.I'm sure they're all just retiring because they want to spend more time with their families.Dodd's retirement comes after months of speculation about his political future, and amid faltering polling numbers and a growing sense among the Democratic establishment that he could not win a sixth term. It also comes less than 24 hours after Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced he would not seek re-election.
Yeah, that's it. more...

— Purple Avenger Don't really want to crap on the ONT so early, but this seemed like a pretty dramatic statement worthy of note.
The U.S. military's intelligence chief in Afghanistan has sharply criticized the work of U.S. spy agencies there, calling them ignorant and out of touch with the Afghan people. At least one data point tends to support the general's contention -- the woman running the CIA station was in a position to be blown up by the splodydope. Anyone with the slightest clue about Arab or Afghan culture would realize having the woman even present would reduce respect and make them view us as weak. That's simply the way Islam is designed. It sounds like the CIA ignored the reality on the Islamic street here in at least that regard. In a report issued by the Center for New American Security think tank, Major General Michael Flynn, deputy chief of staff for intelligence in Afghanistan for the U.S. military and its NATO allies, offered a bleak assessment of the intelligence community's role in the eight-year-old war.
He described U.S. intelligence officials there as "ignorant of local economics and landowners, hazy about who the powerbrokers are and how they might be influenced...and disengaged from people in the best position to find answers."...
This is NOT to say you can't have a woman running the show effectively. She could put on an act, maybe behave like a subservient maid or orderly when locals were present. That certainly could work with a bit of effort with everyone acting their parts accordingly.
It sounds like much of CIA's problem goes back to techniques described in Maj. Gant's proposal. You need to understand and integrate with the local culture. If the General's criticisms are in fact correct, this is not happening.
